The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission has published a new list of 110 institutions it currently does not recognize, warning students, parents, employers and the public to exercise caution when dealing with certificates issued by the institutions.
The notice, dated September 30, 2026, includes institutions associated with Ghana, the United States, United Kingdom, India, Switzerland, Nigeria, Liberia, Zambia and several other countries.
Some of the names may sound similar to established universities or international institutions, which makes checking accreditation before enrolling especially important.
However, GTEC’s terminology also needs to be understood carefully. An institution being listed as unrecognized is not exactly the same regulatory category as an institution listed as unaccredited or one whose institutional accreditation has expired.
GTEC maintains separate public lists for these categories.
Below is the complete September 2026 list of 110 unrecognized institutions, along with instructions for checking whether a university, college, learning centre or academic program is currently recognized in Ghana.

What Did GTEC Announce?
On September 30, 2026, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission published a public notice titled “Unrecognised Institutions as at September 2026.”
GTEC said the 110 institutions on the list are currently not recognized by the Commission because of various quality-assurance concerns.
The Commission advised members of the public to exercise due diligence regarding certificates issued by the listed institutions.
The notice does not say that all 110 institutions are necessarily physically operating campuses in Ghana. Many are associated with other countries.
What matters from GTEC’s perspective is whether academic credentials from those institutions are recognized within Ghana’s tertiary education regulatory system.
What Is the Difference Between Unrecognized and Unaccredited?
This distinction is important because GTEC publishes separate categories.
| GTEC Category | What It Means for Consumers |
|---|---|
| Accredited institution | The institution appears in GTEC’s accreditation system with recognized accreditation status. |
| Unrecognized institution | GTEC says the institution is currently not recognized because of quality-assurance concerns. |
| Unaccredited institution | The institution does not hold the required institutional accreditation from GTEC. |
| Unaccredited learning centre or campus | A particular location or centre has not been accredited even if it is connected with a recognized university. |
| Expired accreditation | The institution previously held accreditation, but GTEC’s current records show the accreditation period has expired. |
Students should therefore avoid using the word “fake” as a substitute for any of these categories unless GTEC or another competent authority specifically makes that finding.
The safest description is to use the exact regulatory status published by GTEC.

Which Institutions on the List Are Associated With Ghana?
Although most institutions on GTEC’s 110-name list are associated with foreign countries, several are listed by GTEC as being located in Ghana or connected with Ghana.
These include:
- Debest College of Science, Arts and Business.
- Faith University Seminary.
- Doxa Open University.
- Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Training School.
- Quest International University.
- Kingdom Living Bible Institute in Kumasi.
- Global Professional College in Effiduase.
- Volta University College, listed as Ghana and Nigeria.
- OAA Consulting Limited in Kumasi.
- Competency School of Business Administration in Kumasi.
- Global Executive College.
Students should use GTEC’s current records rather than relying on an institution’s own advertising when determining recognition status.
Why Are Foreign Universities on Ghana’s GTEC List?
A university does not have to be physically located in Ghana for the recognition of its certificate to matter in Ghana.
Ghanaian students increasingly study through:
- Online universities.
- Distance-learning programs.
- Foreign universities.
- International professional schools.
- Partner institutions.
- Local study centres representing foreign institutions.
A person may later need a foreign qualification recognized for employment, further education, professional licensing or another official purpose in Ghana.
That is why GTEC evaluates foreign credentials and publishes warnings about institutions whose awards it does not currently recognize.
How Do You Check Whether a University or College Is Accredited in Ghana?
The safest method is to check directly with the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission.
GTEC maintains an online institutional database at its official website.
You can search by institution and view information including:
- Institution name.
- Location.
- Institution category.
- Accreditation status.
- Accreditation start date.
- Accreditation expiration date.
- Accredited programs where available.
Visit the official GTEC Institutions Database and search for the school before applying or paying tuition.
An Accredited School Does Not Automatically Mean Every Program Is Accredited
Checking the institution itself is only part of the process.
Students should also verify the accreditation status of the specific academic program they intend to study.
An institution can have institutional accreditation while the status of individual programs differs.
This is particularly important for programs connected with regulated professions such as:
- Nursing.
- Medicine.
- Engineering.
- Teaching.
- Law.
- Pharmacy.
- Allied health professions.
Depending on the profession, additional approval from a professional regulator may also be required.
Students should therefore ask two separate questions:
Is the institution accredited?
And:
Is my specific program currently accredited?
What If a School’s Accreditation Has Expired?
Expired accreditation is another category that should not be confused with GTEC’s 110 unrecognized institutions.
GTEC published a separate notice in July 2026 identifying 34 institutions whose institutional accreditation had expired at that time.
Those institutions included schools in nursing, agriculture, education, technology and other fields.
An expired status can change if an institution successfully completes renewal or reaccreditation.
For that reason, students should always check the live GTEC database instead of relying on an old screenshot, social media post or news story.
A school appearing on an expired-accreditation notice several months ago does not automatically establish what its status is today.
A University Can Be Recognized While a Particular Campus or Learning Centre Is Not Accredited
GTEC also separately regulates learning centres and campuses.
In July 2026, the Commission identified 15 learning centres or campuses belonging to public or recognized institutions that had not been accredited.
This creates another important distinction for students.
You should not assume that every campus, satellite location or distance-learning centre operated under the name of a recognized university automatically has the same accreditation status.
Check the specific location where you intend to study.
What Should You Do If You Are Already Enrolled at a Listed Institution?
Do not make a major academic or financial decision based only on a social media post about the list.
Start by checking GTEC’s official notice and institutional database.
If your school appears on the September 2026 unrecognized list, contact GTEC directly and ask about the recognition status of:
- The institution.
- Your particular program.
- The campus or study centre.
- The period in which you enrolled.
- The qualification you expect to receive.
Dates matter.
Accreditation and recognition statuses can change, so a person’s situation may depend partly on when the program began and what regulatory status existed during the relevant academic period.
Students should keep copies of admission letters, receipts, enrollment records, transcripts and any accreditation claims supplied by the institution.
Could a Certificate From an Unrecognized Institution Be Rejected in Ghana?
GTEC’s September notice specifically advises the public to exercise due diligence regarding certificates issued by the 110 institutions.
Students should therefore not assume that a qualification from an institution on the list will automatically be accepted in Ghana.
Recognition may matter when a graduate attempts to:
- Apply for another academic program.
- Seek credential evaluation.
- Apply for certain jobs.
- Enter a regulated profession.
- Use the qualification for public-sector employment.
- Obtain professional registration.
Whether a specific certificate will be accepted in a specific situation should be confirmed with the organization requiring the credential and, where appropriate, with GTEC.
How Do You Check a Foreign Degree for Recognition in Ghana?
GTEC operates a credential evaluation system for people who need foreign academic qualifications assessed in Ghana.
This is especially important for Ghanaian students considering overseas or online institutions.
Before spending thousands of cedis or several years on a foreign program, consider whether the qualification will be recognized where you intend to use it.
Students can access GTEC’s official Credential Evaluation Management System for information about foreign credential evaluation.
Checking before enrollment is usually much easier than discovering after graduation that a qualification presents recognition problems.
What Should You Check Before Paying School Fees?
Before paying tuition to a tertiary institution in Ghana or enrolling in an online or foreign degree intended for use in Ghana, verify the institution independently.
At minimum, check:
- Whether the institution appears in GTEC’s current database.
- Whether its accreditation status is active.
- The accreditation expiration date.
- Whether your specific program is accredited.
- Whether your campus or learning centre is approved.
- Whether any professional regulator must also approve the program.
- Whether a foreign qualification will be recognized in Ghana.
Do not rely on a school’s logo, website design, social media following or use of terms such as “international,” “global,” “American,” “European,” “chartered” or “accredited.”
Those words alone do not establish recognition by GTEC.
How Many Institutions Does GTEC Currently List?
GTEC’s current public website separates institutions into several categories.
| GTEC Category | Current Public Count |
|---|---|
| Accredited institutions | 324 |
| Unrecognized institutions | 110 |
| Unaccredited institutions | 18 |
| Unaccredited learning centres | 15 |
These categories should be read separately rather than added together and described as one list of “fake universities.”
GTEC uses different regulatory terminology for different circumstances.
Bottom Line
GTEC’s September 30, 2026 notice identifies 110 institutions that the Commission says it currently does not recognize because of quality-assurance concerns.
The list includes Ghanaian and foreign institutions, making it relevant not only to students attending physical schools in Ghana but also to people considering international and online degrees.
The most important step for prospective students is to verify an institution before paying tuition.
Check the school’s current GTEC status, the accreditation dates, the specific academic program and the particular campus or learning centre where the course will be delivered.
Most importantly, do not assume that the terms unrecognized, unaccredited and expired accreditation mean exactly the same thing. GTEC publishes these as separate categories, and an institution’s current status should be checked directly with the Commission.
