On May 25, 2026, Ghana launched a national electronic visa platform operated by the Ghana Immigration Service in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
For eligible tourist and business travelers, the old process of completing an online embassy form, mailing your physical passport to a Ghanaian embassy or consulate, waiting for a visa sticker, and having your passport mailed back is no longer the normal route.

This was one of the biggest inaccuracies in the previous version of this article.
Ghana did not simply make every African passport holder visa-free in the same legal sense.
Instead, President John Dramani Mahama announced a free e-Visa policy for African nationals effective May 25, 2026.
Under the policy, holders of African passports traveling to Ghana for tourism or business who still require a visa can apply online without paying the visa fee.
This is different from being visa-exempt.
Example
A Nigerian citizen is already visa-free under ECOWAS rules and therefore does not need an e-Visa for an ordinary qualifying short visit.
An African passport holder whose country does not have an ordinary visa-waiver agreement with Ghana may instead be directed through the e-Visa system, but the visa fee is waived under Ghana’s 2026 African traveler policy.
Which Ghana Visa Types Are Available Through the New e-Visa Portal?
The national e-Visa portal currently prominently supports two short-term categories.
Tourist e-Visa
For:
- Holidays.
- Sightseeing.
- Visiting friends.
- Visiting family.
- Other short-term recreational travel.
Business e-Visa
For activities such as:

Do not select a tourist or business e-Visa simply because it is easier if your actual purpose is employment, long-term study, or residence.
Ghana e-Visa Requirements in 2026
The official national portal currently lists the following general requirements.
Valid Passport
Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay in Ghana.
Recent Passport Photograph
You need a clear recent color photograph that meets the portal’s visa-photo requirements.
Travel Details
You must provide information including:
- Your intended travel dates.
- Purpose of travel.
- Accommodation arrangements.
Supporting Documents
The supporting documents depend on the visa type.
Tourist Visa Additional Documents
The portal currently requests:
- A travel itinerary.

This is particularly important because the approved e-Visa is delivered electronically.
Yellow Fever Certificate
Ghana requires proof of yellow fever vaccination at the port of entry for arriving travelers aged 9 months and older.
The Yellow Fever card is therefore a travel-entry document even though the portal describes it as something required at the port of entry rather than an ordinary visa upload requirement.

How to Apply for the Ghana e-Visa: Step by Step
Step 1: Check Your Eligibility

Select your nationality.
The system will determine the entry category associated with your passport.
Step 2: Create Your Account
If an e-Visa is required, create an account using your accurate personal and contact information.
Do not create an application using a nickname or a different spelling from your passport.

- As a printed copy.
at Ghana’s international airports and border crossings.
How Much Does a Ghana e-Visa Cost in 2026?
The official Ghana e-Visa portal currently displays:

The portal currently describes these as total visa fees without hidden government charges.
However, your bank or card provider can separately impose:

African Passport Holders
Since May 25, 2026, African passport holders applying for tourism or business under Ghana’s new African e-Visa policy are exempt from the visa fee.
Again, fee-free e-Visa status should not be confused with complete visa exemption.
How Long Does a Ghana e-Visa Take?
The official Ghana e-Visa website currently contains two different processing-time statements.
In one part of the site, the application flow says:
72 hours.
Elsewhere on the same official homepage, it says:
Standard processing: 96 hours.
Ghana Immigration Service’s Terms of Use also states that processing times are estimates and are not guaranteed.
Delays can occur because of:
- Incomplete documents.
- Security screening.
- Questions about travel purpose.
- Incorrect passport information.
- Technical problems.
- High application volume.
Ghana Visa Validity vs Authorized Length of Stay
This is another area where travelers frequently misunderstand Ghana’s visa rules.
The official e-Visa requirements page states that a single-entry visa is valid for 90 days from the date it is issued.
That means the visa generally must be used to enter Ghana before that 90-day validity period expires.
It does not necessarily mean you are automatically authorized to remain in Ghana for 90 days after arrival.
The Portal Currently Contains Conflicting Stay Language
Ghana’s official e-Visa homepage currently:
- Describes tourist visas as suitable for short-term recreation of up to three months.
- Separately states “30 days max stay.”
- Displays a sample e-Visa with a duration of 30 days.
Because of this inconsistency, travelers should rely on:
- The duration stated on their actual approved e-Visa.
- The immigration endorsement or conditions imposed at entry.
- Current instructions from Ghana Immigration Service.
What Happens When You Arrive in Ghana?
Ghana’s main international airport is now officially called Accra International Airport.
The government reverted the previous Kotoka International Airport name in February 2026.
When traveling, keep the following accessible:
- Your passport.
- Your approved e-Visa, where required.
- Your yellow fever certificate.
- Accommodation information.
- Return or onward-travel information where applicable.
The e-Visa may be shown digitally or as a printed document.
Printing a backup copy is still sensible in case your telephone battery dies or you cannot access the internet.

Does Ghana Still Have Visa on Arrival in 2026?
This requires a more careful answer than the old article provided.
Ghana still has a statutory Emergency Entry Visa / Visa on Arrival procedure administered by Ghana Immigration Service.
However, it should not be treated as an ordinary option for travelers who simply forgot to obtain their visa.
Emergency Entry Visa
Under Ghana’s Immigration Regulations, an Emergency Entry Visa can be available in specified circumstances, including when:
- The traveler comes from a country where Ghana has no diplomatic mission or consulate, or
- An emergency assignment creates a need for urgent entry.
The traveler generally needs an application filed on their behalf with Ghana Immigration Service by a Ghana-based host or organization before travel.

What Changed for African Travelers?
Before the May 2026 e-Visa launch, certain African travelers commonly used Ghana’s visa-on-arrival system.
At the e-Visa launch, President Mahama announced that the previous visa-on-arrival arrangement for African travelers covered by the new regime was being discontinued and replaced by the online system.

Can You Work or Study in Ghana With a Tourist e-Visa?
A tourist visa is not a work permit.
Foreign nationals intending to live and work in Ghana generally require the appropriate immigration authorization through Ghana Immigration Service.
Depending on the circumstances, this can include:
- Work authorization.
- Residence permit.
- Student residence permit.
- Other specialized immigration status.
A business e-Visa can allow short-term business activities such as meetings, conferences, trade visits, and negotiations.
It should not be used as a substitute for the immigration authorization required to take ordinary employment in Ghana.
