What is a Ghana Tourist Visa?

A Ghana Tourist Visa is a short-stay visa for foreign nationals visiting Ghana for tourism, leisure, or to see family and friends.
It does not permit employment or long-term residence. Citizens of African countries and ECOWAS member states are currently visa-exempt. All other foreign nationals must obtain a visa before travel, either through a Ghana embassy or consulate in their country of residence, or via the pre-approved Visa on Arrival route for eligible cases.

Who Needs It and Who Is Exempt

  • All African passport holders are visa-exempt as of January 1, 2025. This applies to citizens of all 54 African Union member states, not just ECOWAS countries. Ghana became the fifth African nation to adopt this continental policy, following Rwanda, Seychelles, The Gambia, and Benin.
  • ECOWAS nationals were already visa-exempt before the 2025 expansion and remain so, with stays of up to 90 days subject to immigration clearance.
  • Dual Ghanaian citizens entering with a Ghana passport or Dual Citizenship ID do not need a visitor visa.
  • Some diplomatic and service passport holders are exempt under bilateral arrangements (Brazil, China, Cuba, Germany, India, South Africa, UAE, and others per GIS listings).
  • All other foreign nationals should apply in advance at a Ghana embassy or consulate in their country of residence, or explore the pre-approval Visa on Arrival route described below.

Requirements and Eligibility

  • Completed Ghana tourist visa application (online via your mission’s portal, or PDF where specified).
  • Passport valid for at least 6 months from the intended travel date, with two blank pages.
  • Two recent passport photos (white background, full face visible, no eyewear).
  • Proof of travel itinerary or return/onward ticket.
  • Hotel booking or invitation letter from a host in Ghana (with address and contact details).
  • Proof of funds (recent bank statements or employer letter).
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate — mandatory for all travelers aged over 9 months entering or transiting Ghana. The certificate must show vaccination at least 10 days before travel and must not be more than 10 years old. Find a vaccination clinic near you at our yellow fever vaccine finder.
  • For minors: birth certificate plus notarized parental consent and copies of parents’ ID.
  • Non-nationals applying from outside their home country must provide a valid residence permit for their country of application.

Application Process (Step-by-Step)

  1. Locate your mission: Find your nearest Ghana Embassy, High Commission, or Consulate using the table below or at Ghana Consulate Near Me. Access the visa portal or downloadable form on the mission’s website. Many missions now use the mfa.gov.gh online application system.
  2. Prepare your file: Gather passport, photos, itinerary, proof of funds, hotel/invitation letter, and yellow fever certificate. Non-nationals must also include a valid residence permit.
  3. Pay the fee: As instructed by the mission — online card payment or cashier’s order. Keep the receipt; fees are non-refundable once paid.
  4. Submit: In person at the mission on your appointment date, or by tracked courier/post where the mission accepts postal applications. Some missions are mail-in only. Confirm the submission method before traveling to the consulate.
  5. Processing: Standard processing is a minimum of 5 business days from receipt, with most missions taking 5-14 business days. Respond promptly to any requests for clarification to avoid delays.
  6. Collect passport: Pick up in person on the collection date given at submission, or by tracked return mail where applicable. The visa grants entry within the stipulated timeframe; the actual permitted length of stay is endorsed by Ghana Immigration at the port of entry.

Visa on Arrival Option

Ghana’s Visa on Arrival (also called an Emergency Entry Visa) is a separate route for two categories of traveler: those coming from countries where there is no Ghana embassy or consulate, and those who must travel urgently on short notice. It is not a walk-up option at the airport.

A host in Ghana must submit an application letter to the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) Headquarters at Cantonments, Accra before the traveler departs. GIS reviews the file and, if approved, issues an official Approval Letter for Visa on Arrival. The traveler must carry this letter, along with a valid passport, yellow fever certificate, and return ticket when boarding. On arrival at Kotoka International Airport, the traveler presents the approval letter, completes the visa form, and pays any applicable fee to receive a 30-day single-entry stamp.

Arriving without the GIS approval letter will likely result in denied boarding by the airline or refusal at the port of entry. Extensions beyond 30 days must be applied for at GIS. For full details, see the Ghana Visa on Arrival guide or visit gis.gov.gh directly.

Processing Time and Fees

Standard processing is a minimum of 5 business days from the date the mission receives a complete application. Most posts fall in the 5-14 business day range. Some missions offer an expedited service at additional cost — typically available if booked before 11:00 AM on the submission date. Fees vary by country of application and by entry type (single vs. multiple entry). All consular fees are non-refundable once paid, including for incomplete or withdrawn applications.

Tips and Common Issues

  • Confirm your passport has 6+ months of validity remaining and at least two blank pages before you apply — and before you book flights.
  • Your yellow fever card is mandatory. Immigration officers check it both at visa application stage and on arrival at Kotoka. Without it, you may be denied boarding or entry.
  • Names, dates, and passport numbers must match exactly across all documents. A mismatch between your passport and booking confirmation is one of the most common causes of delays.
  • If you are not a national of the country where you are applying, include your valid residence permit. Missions will request it, and missing it costs processing time.
  • Some missions — particularly Canada and some European posts — are mail-in only. Use trackable courier, not standard post. Keep the tracking number until the visa is in your hands.
  • Public holidays and peak travel seasons (December, Easter) extend processing times. Apply at least four weeks ahead if traveling during those periods.
  • Keep photocopies and digital scans of every document you submit. If anything is queried, you can respond the same day.
  • Note that a visa is not a guarantee of entry into Ghana. Ghana Immigration makes the final determination at the port of entry and endorses the permitted length of stay in your passport.

FAQs

Do African passport holders still need a visa for Ghana?

No. Since January 1, 2025, all African passport holders can enter Ghana visa-free. This covers all 54 African Union member states. You will still need to clear immigration on arrival and carry standard travel documents including a valid yellow fever certificate.

Is there an online visa application for Ghana?

Many Ghana missions now offer online application portals — check your specific mission’s website. A centralized national e-visa platform is scheduled to launch on May 25, 2026. Until then, applications go through individual mission portals or in person.

Can I get a Ghana visa on arrival?

Yes, but only with prior approval from the Ghana Immigration Service. Your host in Ghana must apply to GIS before you travel. You cannot walk up at the airport without an approval letter. See the Visa on Arrival section above and the full guide for the step-by-step process.

How long can I stay in Ghana on a tourist visa?

The visa grants entry within a stipulated timeframe, but your actual permitted length of stay is endorsed by Ghana Immigration at the port of entry — typically up to 3 months for tourists with sufficient funds. Visa on Arrival approvals result in a 30-day single-entry stamp. Overstays attract fines and penalties. Extensions must be applied for at the Ghana Immigration Service before your permitted period expires.

Is a yellow fever certificate really mandatory?

Yes. Ghana is classified as a yellow fever transmission risk country. All travelers aged over 9 months are required to show proof of vaccination against yellow fever — both at the visa application stage and on arrival. The certificate must show vaccination at least 10 days before travel and must not be more than 10 years old. Use the yellow fever vaccine finder to locate a clinic near you.

What if my passport is from a country with no Ghana embassy?

If there is no Ghana diplomatic mission in your country of residence, you are eligible for the Visa on Arrival / Emergency Entry Visa route. Your host in Ghana must apply to the Ghana Immigration Service on your behalf before you travel. See the Visa on Arrival section for details.

What if processing is delayed?

Contact the mission by email or phone with your application reference number. Delays most often occur around public holidays, peak travel seasons, or when documents are missing or mismatched. Submit a complete file and respond quickly to any queries to minimize the risk.
