250 Things to Know Before Moving to Ghana

The Ghanaian passport has been ranked 68th globally for 2026, according to the May Henley Passport Index update, and was 69th in the January 2026 ranking. Ghana sits 11th on the African continent, tied with Tanzania. The passport provides access to approximately 68 visa-free or visa-on-arrival destinations.

Ghana’s 2026 Passport Ranking: 68th-69th Globally, 11th in Africa

Ghana’s passport is ranked 68th-69th among 199 assessed passports worldwide in 2026. Ghana is tied with Tanzania and ahead of Nigeria (89th), Togo (77th), and Cameroon (87th).

Seychelles (24th), Mauritius (27th), and South Africa (48th) top the continental list. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ghana is “bouncing back stronger and better.”

Note: Visa-free figures combine visa-free, visa-on-arrival, and eTA destinations.

How the Henley Passport Index Works

The Henley Passport Index, maintained by Henley & Partners, is the original ranking of world passports based on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

When a destination does not require a visa, offers a visa-on-arrival, or permits an eTA, it counts as “visa-free.” Destinations requiring a traditional visa or pre-departure e-Visa are excluded. When passports tie, ranks are shared and the next number is consecutive.

For Ghana, the 68 destinations include countries like Singapore, Kenya, and Barbados, plus ECOWAS nations where no visa is required.

Visa-Free Access for Ghana Passport Holders (ECOWAS & Beyond)

As of May 2026, Ghanaian passport holders have visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to approximately 68 countries and territories:

  • ECOWAS Region: Visa-free access to all 15 member states (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo). Some countries, such as Cape Verde, may require online pre-registration despite the ECOWAS protocol.
  • Rest of Africa: Kenya, Rwanda, Seychelles (24th globally, 154 destinations), and Tanzania, among others.
  • Asia & Americas: Singapore (60 days), Philippines, Bangladesh (VOA), Vietnam (e-visa or VOA), and Barbados (6 months visa-free).

In April 2026, Cabinet approved new reciprocal visa waiver agreements with Zambia, Maldives, and Antigua & Barbuda for 30-day stays. These agreements are not yet in effect; they must be ratified by Parliament first.

Additionally, a free visa policy for African citizens (waiving fees only) was announced, effective May 25, 2026 (Africa Day). All Africans will still need to apply and be vetted.

Ghana has added 23 new countries to its visa waiver list since President Mahama assumed office in early 2025, according to Minister Ablakwa, bringing the total number of visa-exempt destinations to 50.

Historical Ranking: From 84th (2021) to 68th (2026)

Ghana’s passport ranked 53rd in 2006, fell to 84th in 2021, and has since risen 16 places to 68th in 2026.

Year-by-year snapshot:

Special Notes for Dual Citizens & the “1996 Rule”

Following the Supreme Court ruling in Asare v. Attorney General, dual nationals are recognized as citizens by operation of the constitution. You are not required to possess a Dual Citizenship Certificate to apply for a Ghanaian passport, provided you can supply primary proof of Ghanaian citizenship.

However, dual citizens should note the “1996 Rule”: anyone who did not hold primary Ghanaian citizenship as of December 31, 1996, does not qualify for dual citizenship registration and is advised to apply for a “Right of Abode” instead.

Guarantor requirement: Passport applications require two guarantors (age 18 or older, known applicant for at least 2 years) and one professional witness (lawyer, doctor, senior civil servant, or police officer) who knows the applicant for at least 2 years and resides in the applicant’s host country. Guarantors assume legal liability for repatriation expenses if needed.
