Applying for a Ghana tourist visa changed significantly in 2026. Ghana officially launched its national electronic visa system on May 25, allowing eligible foreign travelers to apply online instead of relying primarily on the traditional embassy and consulate application process.

The Ghana Immigration Service e-Visa portal now allows travelers to check their eligibility by nationality, create an account, upload supporting documents, pay electronically, track an application, and receive an approved e-Visa by email.

One important detail has become clearer as the system has developed: not every foreign traveler now follows the same process. The official portal currently separates nationalities into Visa Free, Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), and e-Visa categories. As of September 2, 2026, the portal displays 54 visa-free nationalities, 12 ETA nationalities, and more than 40 nationalities in the e-Visa category.

That means you should check your passport nationality before paying or submitting an application. Some travelers need a paid e-Visa, some are directed to obtain an ETA, some qualify for visa-free travel, and African passport holders are covered by Ghana’s 2026 Africa-focused visa policy.

What Is a Ghana Tourist Visa?

A Ghana tourist visa allows an eligible foreign national to visit Ghana temporarily for purposes such as holidays, sightseeing, recreation, or visiting friends and family.

The Ghana Immigration Service’s current e-Visa platform describes its Tourist Visa as intended for holidays, visits to friends or family, and short-term recreation.

A tourist visa is not permission to take up employment or establish long-term residence in Ghana. Travelers intending to work, conduct business, study, or live in Ghana should make sure they are using the immigration category appropriate for their purpose.

Ghana’s Immigration Regulations also distinguish visitor status from residence permits and other immigration categories. Choosing the correct category is therefore more than an administrative detail.

Who Needs a Ghana Tourist Visa in 2026?

The answer depends primarily on your nationality and the purpose of your trip.

The safest first step is not to assume that you need a tourist e-Visa based on what another traveler was required to obtain. Instead, use the nationality eligibility checker on the official Ghana e-Visa portal.

Ghana’s current electronic system distinguishes between travelers who are visa-free, travelers who need an Electronic Travel Authorization, and travelers who need an e-Visa.

The ETA category is particularly important because older Ghana visa guides may not mention it. For example, the official portal currently classifies a United Kingdom passport holder as “ETA Required” and states “Up to 30 days.”

That is why grouping all U.S., UK, Canadian, Australian, European, or other non-African travelers together is no longer reliable. Check the actual passport nationality through GIS immediately before applying.

Visa rules can also change as Ghana signs additional bilateral agreements or updates its electronic eligibility database.

Ghana Tourist Visa Rules for African Passport Holders

Ghana introduced a major change for African travelers when the national e-Visa system launched on May 25, 2026.

President John Dramani Mahama had previously announced that, effective May 25, African nationals traveling to Ghana would be able to obtain e-visas online free of charge. When the system officially launched, the government again announced the removal of visa fees for African passport holders applying online for business or tourism.

The policy was presented as part of Ghana’s wider push to support African mobility, tourism, trade, investment, and continental integration.

Travelers should still distinguish the free-visa policy from existing visa-free or bilateral visa-waiver arrangements. A passport that already qualifies for visa-free entry may not need an e-Visa application at all.

The practical rule is simple: do not assume every African passport follows exactly the same paperwork process. Enter your nationality into the official GIS eligibility checker and follow the result displayed for that passport.

If the system identifies your nationality as visa-free, follow the visa-free entry requirements. If it directs you to an electronic application, follow that procedure and verify that the applicable African visa policy has been reflected before making any payment.

Ghana Tourist Visa Requirements in 2026

The Ghana Immigration Service currently lists several general requirements for e-Visa applicants.

• Valid passport: Your passport must remain valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay in Ghana.
• Passport-sized photograph: Submit a clear, recent color photograph that meets standard visa photo requirements.
• Travel details: Provide information about your travel dates, purpose of travel, and accommodation.
• Travel itinerary: Tourist applicants should provide details of their planned travel and places they intend to visit.
• Proof of accommodation: Provide a hotel reservation or the address of the person hosting you in Ghana.
• Active email address: This is used for application notifications and delivery of an approved e-Visa.
• Payment method: Where a visa fee applies, GIS lists debit cards, credit cards, and mobile money as electronic payment methods.
• Yellow fever vaccination: Proof of yellow fever vaccination is required at the port of entry.

Additional documents can be requested depending on nationality, visa category, or individual circumstances. Applicants should therefore use the official eligibility checker and review the requirements displayed for their nationality before submitting an application.

How to Apply for a Ghana Tourist Visa Online

For travelers whose nationality is eligible for or requires the national e-Visa system, the process is now largely digital.

1. Check your eligibility. Select your nationality on the official Ghana e-Visa portal to determine whether GIS classifies your passport as visa-free, ETA required, or e-Visa required.
2. Select the correct procedure. If the checker says e-Visa required, proceed with the appropriate electronic visa application. If it says ETA required or visa-free, follow the instructions associated with that classification instead.
3. Create an account. Where an online application is required, register using an active email address.
4. Complete the application. Enter your personal information, passport information, travel dates, accommodation, and purpose of visit.
5. Upload your documents. Provide the required photograph and supporting travel documents.
6. Pay and submit. If a fee applies to your nationality and visa category, complete payment through the electronic system and submit the application.
7. Track the application. GIS provides online application tracking using the application reference number.
8. Receive the travel authorization. Once approved, the applicable electronic travel document is delivered through the electronic system.

For approved e-Visas, the GIS portal states that the document can be presented digitally or printed and is accepted at Ghana’s international airports and border crossings.

How Much Does a Ghana Tourist Visa Cost?

As of September 2, 2026, the official Ghana e-Visa portal displays a total price of US$260 for its standard Tourist Visa.

Using approximate September 2 exchange rates, US$260 is around GH₵2,935, GBP 193, or RMB 1,748. Currency conversions are estimates only and will move with exchange rates.

The portal also states that its listed visa fees are total fees and that prices are subject to change.

African travelers require special attention here. Ghana’s government announced that African nationals would receive e-visas online free of charge under the policy that took effect on May 25, 2026. Some African passport holders may also qualify for visa-free entry under existing arrangements.

Do not pay US$260 simply because that is the standard tourist visa price displayed on the portal. Check your nationality first. Your passport may fall into a visa-free, ETA, free-visa, or other nationality-specific category.

Applicants should always check the amount displayed by the official system immediately before paying.

How Long Does a Ghana e-Visa Take?

Travelers should leave extra time between applying and their intended departure date.

The official Ghana e-Visa website currently contains inconsistent processing estimates. Its step-by-step application section says an approved e-Visa is delivered within approximately 72 hours, while another section of the same official portal lists standard processing as 96 hours.

Because the government’s own portal displays both figures, travelers should not treat either as a guaranteed deadline.

The portal’s Terms of Use also specifically states that processing times are estimates and are not guaranteed.

Apply well before your flight whenever possible. Additional review, missing documents, application errors, public holidays, technical problems, security screening, or unusually high application volumes could extend the process.

Do not make an urgent trip dependent on receiving approval at the last possible moment.

Ghana Tourist Visa Validity and Length of Stay

Visa validity and permitted stay are related, but they are not the same thing.

The Ghana Immigration Service currently states that a single-entry e-Visa is valid for 90 days from the date it is issued. That means the visa must be used within its validity period. It does not automatically mean that a traveler is permitted to remain in Ghana for 90 days.

The official portal currently displays “30 days max stay” alongside its statement that the visa has 90 days of validity from issuance. The sample tourist e-Visa displayed on the government portal also shows a duration of 30 Days.

There is, however, an inconsistency on the same government website. Its description of the Tourist Visa refers to holidays, visits to friends and family, and short-term recreation “up to 3 months.”

Because the government’s current portal contains both descriptions, travelers should not assume that the phrase “up to three months” guarantees a 90-day permitted stay.

What About Ghana Visa on Arrival and Emergency Entry Visas?

Ghana’s Emergency Entry Visa is different from an ordinary tourist e-Visa.

The legal framework appears in Regulation 4 of Ghana’s Immigration Regulations, 2001 (L.I. 1691). It covers particular circumstances involving foreign nationals who arrive without a standard visa and meet specified conditions.

Among other requirements, the regulations address travelers proceeding from countries where Ghana has no diplomatic mission or consulate and travelers seeking entry for qualifying emergency assignments.

The regulations also address applications filed on behalf of a traveler by a host in Ghana and require information concerning matters such as the traveler’s passport, proposed arrival date, purpose of visit, duration of stay, and place of residence in Ghana.

This should not be interpreted as permission for any traveler who forgot to obtain a visa to simply fly to Ghana and assume a visa will be issued at the airport.

There was another important procedural change in August 2026. According to reports quoting a Ghana Immigration Service public notice, the Service ended manual processing of B1 Business and B2 Tourist applications under the Emergency Entry Visa schedule effective August 3, 2026. Applications in those two categories are now directed to the Ghana electronic visa platform, with a reported standard fee of US$260 where the fee applies.

There is currently some overlap between old and new government information. The general Visa on Arrival/Emergency Entry Visa page on the GIS website still displays instructions involving an application letter and supporting documents associated with the older EEV process.

For that reason, travelers seeking a B1 or B2 Emergency Entry Visa should use the newer electronic visa procedure and confirm the current process with GIS if the older emergency-entry page appears to conflict with the electronic portal.

Common Ghana Tourist Visa Mistakes to Avoid

The new electronic system removes some paperwork, but it does not eliminate the possibility of delays, refusals, or travelers using the wrong entry procedure.

• Applying through an unofficial website: Start with the Ghana Immigration Service’s official e-Visa portal.
• Assuming every foreign traveler needs an e-Visa: The current GIS system includes visa-free, ETA, and e-Visa classifications.
• Confusing an ETA with an e-Visa: If GIS classifies your nationality as ETA required, follow the ETA procedure rather than assuming the standard tourist e-Visa is the correct document.
• Relying on another traveler’s nationality: Entry rules are passport-specific. What applies to a British traveler may not apply to an American, Canadian, Australian, Nigerian, South African, or other traveler.
• Applying too early: A single-entry e-Visa is currently valid for 90 days from issuance, so applying far ahead of the trip could create a validity problem.
• Confusing 90-day validity with a 90-day stay: The current portal separately states a 30-day maximum stay for the standard e-Visa.
• Applying too late: The portal displays both 72-hour and 96-hour processing estimates, and neither is guaranteed. Give yourself additional time.
• Using a passport close to expiration: GIS requires at least six months of validity beyond the intended stay.
• Forgetting yellow fever documentation: GIS states that proof of yellow fever vaccination must be presented upon arrival.
• Assuming visa approval guarantees admission: GIS expressly states that visa approval does not guarantee entry. Final entry decisions are made by immigration officers at Ghana’s ports of entry.
