The program, organized by the 14th batch of the Chinese medical team in Ghana in partnership with Lekma Hospital, focuses on laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery and cataract treatment. It marks the first formal advanced training course of its kind between China and Ghana in these specialized medical fields.
Expanding Ghana’s Capacity in Modern Surgery
Yang Yongguang, head of the Chinese medical team, explained that the goal of the initiative is to strengthen long-term surgical capacity in Ghana rather than provide short-term assistance. The training combines classroom instruction with real clinical procedures, allowing local surgeons to build confidence through direct experience.
With continued technical support from the Chinese team, Lekma Hospital has already carried out several pioneering laparoscopic and cataract surgeries. Many of these procedures were performed for the first time in Ghana and, in some cases, across West Africa. These milestones have helped elevate the hospital’s role as a regional center for advanced surgical care.
Improved Outcomes for Patients and Practitioners
Mahamadu Zakariah, head of the surgical unit at Lekma Hospital, said minimally invasive surgery is increasingly essential in modern healthcare due to its shorter recovery times, reduced blood loss, and improved patient outcomes. He noted that the techniques being taught align with international best practices.
Zakariah also credited the Chinese medical team and members of the Chinese business community in Ghana for supporting the hospital’s surgical development. Their collaboration has helped make specialized procedures more affordable for local patients while increasing the number of operations that allow Ghanaian surgeons to gain practical mastery.
Affordable Care and Sustainable Knowledge Transfer
One of the key outcomes of the program has been the ability to provide subsidized surgeries to patients who might otherwise lack access to advanced treatment options. At the same time, Ghanaian surgeons are gaining repeated hands-on exposure to complex procedures, ensuring that expertise remains within the country.
Hospital officials say this model creates long-term value by pairing improved patient access with professional development. As more surgeons become proficient in minimally invasive and cataract procedures, Ghana’s healthcare system becomes more resilient and self-sustaining.
